Trailing
Trailing, tracking, man trailing, searching, scent trailing, search and trail, pet trailing.
There are so many terms given to dogs searching for something by following the scent track it leaves behind. We tend to mainly just use the simple term trailing as we will find both humans and dogs. Below we explore some of the common questions so that you can learn more about the activity and decide if you would like to join in!
What is trailing?
Trailing is like a giant game of hide and seek for your dog but where we look much more in depth at their body language and the communication between dog and handler so instead of randomly free searching they are more precise. It is a scent work activity where the dog uses a scent article from the human or dog to follow a specific ground scent left by them and use their nose to locate them.
Is it for me and my dog?
In short…Yes! Trailing is an activity that can be enjoyed by absolutely any dog. No previous scent work training is required. Dog’s can be any breed, any age, and with all different behaviour types. It is fantastic at helping dogs in a variety of ways from providing enrichment, building confidence, giving an outlet, helping to build relationship, improving focus, increasing physical exercise in a low impact manner, and giving the chance to join in even when reactive as dog’s are worked individually.
The only dogs it is not suitable for are those with certain medical conditions.
For the human end we advise a general level of fitness and walking ability although that being said we can adapt as necessary by prior arrangement. We are able to provide support with handling your dog. We can even offer 1 to 1 sessions for wheelchair users and those with certain physical needs with trails to suit.
Do i need special equipment?
All you need to get started are a harness and some tasty food. You will be using a long line however you can borrow one of ours if you just want to give it a go.
If you find it is something you and your dog enjoy then there are more specific trailing harnesses and bits of kit you can then look into.
